Description

Specialty Coffee - Las Tejedoras

For the month of October, we chose this Mexican coffee - not only for its wonderful quality, but also to celebrate the women dedicating their unique talent to its farming.

Las Tejedores (the weavers) are women that continue the deep-rooted Mayan traditions through fine textile arts that exemplify the essence of the Chiapas States.

For the people of this area, coffee is synonymous with opportunity and economic stability - a product of Mayan prosperity in these Mexican coffee lands. Textile weaving continues their long-standing artistic culture, and amplifies the powerful voices and extraordinary stories at the core of their collective work.

Through this limited edition coffee, Perky want to highlight the stories of Las Tejedoras: their work as coffee growers and textile weavers.

Amidst the mountains of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, the community of Santo Domingo la Cascada was founded. In this community, Elba Roblero was born - descendent of ancestors who began cultivating coffee in this local market - starting with a single variety.

Elba began to understand the cultivation and maintenance process at an early age and developed her skills alongside Caravela and the PECA (Coffee Producer Education Program) team. She began selectively harvesting only ripe fruits, followed by a 36-hour fermentation process before washing and finally transferring to drying patios on her far “Las Limas”.

In the same area of the Sierra Madre mountains, the “El Arroyo” farm is run by Marbell Roblero. In the same way as Elba, she was taught to cultivate and manage coffee from a very young age. Her parents were pioneers in this crop, which today is the main source of income for local communities.

For Marbell, this lot is a source of pride, and she is focussed on continually improving her crop. Caravela has been providing support and field management recommendations - including pruning and fertilisation, selective harvesting of only ripe cherries, floating the coffee to remove any foreign material, and fermentation processes that currently range from 27 to 30 hours and many more.

This coffee was processed using the traditional washed method - producing a clean & sweet cup, with distinct flavours of cocoa, and a vanilla and marzipan aroma. Ripe, fruity notes of blackberry and raspberry run through the coffee, finishing with a syrupy body that is emphasised by stewed plum and dried apricot sweetness. This all comes together to create a balanced, complex and high-end coffee experience.

Ingredients & Allergens

Ingredients: Coffee beans

For allergens see ingredients in bold.

Due to the way our food is stored and packaged, this product may contain traces of other allergens due to cross-contamination.

Storage

Your beans’ greatest enemies are air, moisture, heat, and light.

Store in an air tight container in a dark, cool, dry place. A cabinet near the oven is often too warm, and so is a spot on the kitchen counter that gets strong afternoon sun.

To keep the great flavour, use within 1 month. The coffee will keep for up to 6 months but the flavour won't be as good. See best before date.
